As July drifts into August, we work, we play, we vacation. Some of us. I certainly get my fun and relaxation in. In the Android world, and with iOS too, the third quarter of the year brings lots of mobile app activity.

This is an annual rite of passage, dancing with the changing element partners of the operating systems.

In the last six days, we've updated 10 of our nearly two dozen Android apps. How do we do it? With lots of attention to details.

Generally after changes or fixes are done with our apps, we test them on real devices. Currently, we are using these phones or tablets to install and test the apps before sending the updates to Google:

• 8 inch Tablet with Android 13:   level 33 - 2022
• Mobile phone with Android 14:  level 34 - 2023
• Mobile phone with Android 15:  level 35 - 2024 
• 10 inch Tablet with Android 16: level 36 - 2025 (required for late 2026 distribution)

Most of the time testing on just Android 15 and 16 is all that's needed. It's amusing across these devices that the place in the system menu to find the operating system version keeps changing!

So, the answer to Should You Gamble Updating Mobile Apps depends on how new your device is, and how much attention you pay to evolving security issues on your phone/tablet. Many of the older devices cannot be updated to a newer version of the operating system.

Android developers are required to adapt their apps to the yearly operating system changes.
