September 1, 1990. Our first year in our first office. Above is our first logo! Our current office still has the Lionel Railroad Map of the USA you see in the background. The yearly wall calendar next to the desk survived too. It is nice to use for scheduling blogs, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Instagram. We also schedule the social media updates electronically but it is nice to see them all on the wall!  Hugh Smith in the office, 1990.

During the spring and summer of 2018, The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia hosted the interactive exhibit: Game Masters. The hands-on presentation is a walk through the history of video gaming from arcade favorites all the way to today's web and console games. Those old arcade games from the late 1970's through the '80s greet you as you enter the exhibition. We couldn't resist a quick session with the cherished favorite Asteroids. I'd say one of the big hits of this show was a wall - high wall - wide projection of a spectacular dancing game. You know the kind. Watch the three dancers and follow the steps. Easy. Lots of fun. Young and old relived the thrill of engaging with these great games. From Pac-Man to Minecraft. They were all there. Hugh Smith from Quikthinking Software at Game Masters. A deeper dive into Game Masters reveals some hidden gems. We liked the recorded game developer interviews along with rare artwork from some of the games. I was also fascinated leafing through a hand written developer storyboard which reminded me of some of my own game planning sketches with notes. 30 legendary game designers are profiled in Game Masters. For the historian, app programmer, or casual fan there's a lot to listen to, watch, and read. For the gamer, the goal is to play as many of the 100 games in the exhibition as possible and beat all the boss levels. We got to play as many games as possible but didn't come close to the magic 100. Game Masters at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia ends its run on Monday, September 3, 2018.

  • 0 Black History Expert

Seven years between updates? Not exactly. One of the first Android apps we published back on July 4, 2011 was Black History Expert, previously released as a Kindle book. We converted the Kindle book into a phone - tablet based swipe through the pages casual reader. That's the way it remains today in an exclusive app version. One of the app stores missed our 2016 update, so the original version sat in that store (since 2011) continuing to get downloads. The 7 year itch is over and it's time for something new! Inside the new Black History Expert you can read about the lives of artists, activists, athletes, and performers in music, sciences, civil rights, sports, entertainment and much more with no ads. You will be the Black History Expert with the awesome new version of the 2018 update. Discover more about Black History Expert and watch the quick 20 second video below.

  • 0 Superhero Flyer Game adds Levels, Leaps and Leaderboard

When we first created the Superhero Flyer game app in 2017, we thought the U.S. would have the most players. It turns out India, the United States, and Brazil in order are the top three countries that love this Android game. Superhero Flyer is a one-touch casual action game where using careful strategy helps you win. In a recent tweet we teased a new game level. There are actually 3 new levels for you to enjoy. Even better news is we've added an online high score leaderboard. Superhero Flyer gameplay gets faster and faster as the levels increase. What makes the action unpredictable is how long certain superheroes appear and disappear as you play.    Another new way to enjoy the game is by using a new pause feature when you need a quick break. There are consequences when you pause the action too often. You'll discover what they are as you experiment and try it out.     To access the online leaderboard, touch the Login button as you see above under the red check mark.     Once you are logged in, if you already have a high score in the game (on your phone/tablet), touch the Send Score button highlighted above under the red check mark. That will send your high score to the online leaderboard. Send your high score at anytime you are logged in from the screen above. There is a really low minimum high score to get on the leaderboard. Even if you are not logged in and are not online your high score is saved within the game on your phone or tablet so you can send it to the leaderboard any time (you are logged in). By the way we love this game on a tablet. To see your leaderboard score or the game leaders when you are logged in, touch the green Leaders crown. Good luck! This new version 1.6 of Superhero Flyer is available now.

  • 0 Why App Developers Say Anyone Can Do It

About a couple of years ago I received the following email on a Saturday night from Ezell who wrote: "I am looking to get into the industry and like you focused on African American games. How have you found the industry has it been lucrative?" Here was my exact answer: "Hello Ezell. The app industry is extremely hyper competitive so you have to know what you are doing. Lucrative income was not my primary motivation for creating apps. I will tell you that out of 20 apps we have released 4 of the top 5 money makers do have African American themes or images however some have cross-over appeal beyond the black market. Not all of our apps have African American themes. Focus on research. Study the market. Release high quality products." I wonder how Ezell is doing now and if a decision was made to take the first step by moving forward. You just have to do it and make a move without fear to accomplish what you want. Here's a tweet along with a link to an article I shared that is relevant to the theme of Ezell's question. "Anyone can do it," making apps that is, but you have to believe in yourself first!   How to make a video game @Clickteam @Basic4Android. • 0 How to Use Online Training to Get Ahead

Don't knock online training if you've never tried it. We recently counted 19 certificates of completion from Udemy courses we've tackled going back to 2015. Discipline is the key to success to sharpen a skill or learn something new. The convenience to set your own schedule and pace are big benefits with online courses. We've done other online courses with additional trainers too, however Udemy is our favorite. Our total certificate of completion count from everyone is 37. As someone who was successful slogging it out at a 4 year school to get a college degree the traditional way by attending classroom lectures I have a passionate appreciation for both worlds: old school and new school learning. You still have lots of time left before the end of 2018 to make your move! Lifelong learning makes a lot of sense. Lifelong learning makes a difference. Go for it.

Hugh Smith If you are into game cheat videos, climb on board with me as I try to get through all of the levels of Super Hero Flyer Game App without embarrassing myself. You'll get a lot of cool tips about how to approach the game with strategy. I share a bunch during the game play but I don't give it all away. You will definitely discover more about how to play the game. There is a nice help screen in the game app that is a great guide for all of the superhero character moves. In an earlier blog post about the Superhero Flyer team I give credit to the other international crew members who helped contribute to the development of the game. I've just added a big extra you don't see and I don't mention in the video and that benefit to you in the game will be released soon. Watch the video and see if I can beat the game!

  • 0 The App that Reveals what Made America Great

"You will make a difference in the world, but not immediately. Your first obligation is to find something you like doing, because if you like doing it, you'll do it well" -- Condoleezza Rice. These words of wisdom sum up the thousands of thoughts we've compiled into a comprehensive black history resource app that has just been released. As you read through Black History Quotes Express you won't be disappointed.  What I found most interesting in doing the research for this project about the men and women we profile was that their true personalities can't be masked when they write or speak their minds. Follow the link above for all the details about this new Android App. Watch the video below to hear me tell the inside story. This is the app that reveals what made America great.
